Keeping You Informed – Information from the Sacramento Police Department North Command

I am excited to share that we will be expanding the use of our drones. In a public safety partnership, the Sacramento Fire Department (SFD) and the Sacramento Police Department (SPD) constantly strive to provide the highest level of service to the community. To increase public safety and decrease emergency response times, our agencies will conduct a Drone as First Responder (DFR) Trial Program in our North Area. This will occur for multiple weeks, Wednesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 8 PM, starting November 20th until mid-December, depending on the weather conditions.

DFR is a newer concept in public safety that utilizes small uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) or drones dispatched to calls for service from a fixed location. They will provide critical updates before public safety arrives on the scene, verify information, or search areas for missing persons. A DFR drone may be dispatched on calls for service with or instead of emergency services personnel for this trial period.
This trial program will take place within our Police Districts 1 and 2. he metrics tracked and reviewed will include response times, workload, and customer service outcomes. After this DFR trial program, the City of Sacramento’s public safety agencies will review the results to determine future plans.
